The Girl in a Coma David Moss Books

Thoroughly enjoyed this read. Fascinating concept executed in an original way. Not your everyday YA mystery, but one I couldn’t put down. Highly recommend, especially if you’re a history buff.

The Girl in a Coma David Moss Books Reviews

Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of The Girl in a Coma, in exchange for an honest review.

15 year old Allison Briscoe is in a persistent vegetative state, yet she can hear everything happening within the confines of her hospital room. Shot in the head on the way home from work, Allison spends her days listening to the activity around her and dreams at night of her Mennonite pioneer ancestors. As the dream world becomes more pronounced, Allison becomes increasingly aware of the fact that her real life is in danger and struggles to reach someone before it is too late.

Written from the perspective of a young woman in a coma, the book relies on her memories and those in the dream world in order to have any movement in the plot. As Allison contemplates her reasons for being in the hospital and tries to come up with a logical explanation, her thought processes are a bit rudimentary. Although this is supposed to be a young person's recollections, the inner monologues by Allison were flat and uninspired. The plot was highly implausible and it felt as though the author decided to throw a large number of ideas into the book, regardless of how muddy it made the story. The Girl in a Coma was a miss for me and I would not recommend it to other readers because of the reasons listed above.
Thoroughly enjoyed this read. Fascinating concept executed in an original way. Not your everyday YA mystery, but one I couldn’t put down. Highly recommend, especially if you’re a history buff.
