A quick, enjoyable read. Well-written. Nice little mystery to keep the plot moving & the characters busy. Carissa and Michael are fun protagonists. I gave it 4 stars because it is a fun, lust-heavy, dragon romance (even though there isn't any actual sex, but lots of thinking about it) told simply and well for what it is.Dragons have a pheromone that is very *distracting* to humans, so poor Michael spends a lot of time thinking about how to keep his man-part under control, or what he would like to do if he wasn't a gentleman.
The hard part (pardon the pun) of having characters who *know* their mate is that the main characters spend most of the time trying to control their hormones instead of getting to know each other, which is a bummer for someone who likes to read characters who grow & develop together over the course of a story.

Nope, too much focus on sexual tension and not enough world building and relationship development.
I appreciate the author putting this book out for free so we can sample the writing, but sadly I wasn't into it. The writing felt immature, like it was written by a teenager that just learned about the wonders of sex. It took a lot to keep going after the incessant (and unneeded) references to erect male anatomy; eventually my resolve crumbled and I just gave up.
This was a fun, quick read. I just wish it was more than that. The take on dragons was fresh and the characters were fun, but I would've liked more back story and more world building. Why did the dragons appear 20 years ago? Where were they before? Why is the Dragon King important? What's up with the rest of the gang kidnapping dragons? Why exactly did they kidnap Carissa? So many unanswered questions! Also, there's so much sexual tension and a lot of description of all the close calls...but no follow through. That was a little frustating.
I was hoping that the next book in the series would continue on with these characters and answer all my questions. Unfortunately from the look of the blurb and the shorter page length, that doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe if the price goes down I'll pick it up, but until then I'm stopping the series with the first.
This book really surprised me. It is far and away my favorite book so far this year. I always enjoy Julie Wetzel’s writing style and get lost in her stories, but this one really wow’ed me. First off, it’s really fast-paced. Michael and Carissa escape from a dungeon but just keep getting into more sticky situations - one right after the other. I laughed out loud several times as their escapades took a devilishly unexpected and absolutely delightful twist. Through it all, Michael is a decent, gentlemanly, sensitive person. He is strong when it counts and he is utterly loyal, but he certainly can’t be categorized as “alpha”. I loved his sense of duty and responsibility. Carissa is a strong, privileged woman who is ruled by no one. Her brother, the king, has always protected her and loves her fiercely.
Secondly, it’s original, set in a world in which a super-secret elite force protect dragons. The dragons are magical and mystical. Carissa’s magical powers are unequaled, but she pays a high price for her magical gift.
This is a fresh tale of deception, love, and adventure that proves again Julie’s imagination knows no bounds.
I purchased this book on for myself.

The writing was good, but the story was so absurd that it actually made me mad. In order to set up a violent climax, the main characters all consciously band together to make ridiculously bad decisions. There was an obvious way for everyone to avoid any risk. (When the king and the head of security both know who the bad guy is and already have enough evidence to prove his misdeeds, maybe the right move would be to just arrest him when he doesn't expect it rather than set up some over-complicated scheme where people are likely to get hurt.)
The prose was nicely written, and the characters were likable enough except for their utter stupidity. But suspension of disbelief can only go so far, and if this kingdom's leaders were really that moronic they would have been assassinated long before.
It's a really fast read, certainly, which is probably the reason I got through it. I was expecting cool modern dragons and I got a lot of soft core dragon porn which was...not what I wanted. There's clearly world building but it's barely glanced at. Why didn't people know about dragons? How does magic work? I have so many questions.
This tale has an interesting premise. However, the need for clean up is so extensive that I gave up after a quarter of the book. Without spoiling for those who choose to overlook the issues, I will just say it reads like a fourteen year old horny boy wrote it...quit beating us over the head with the hard on...we get it already! And the use of "oh" as in "oh, how she loved his scent so," got ridiculous. Word choice matters. There are a dozen words for snicker. There is a difference in then and than, etc.
Please get a beta reader. You will find people interested in the story rather than quitting the book in frustration.
